About The Programme

The proposed PhD programme in Sustainable Agricultural and Food Systems (SAFS), seeks to contribute to Ghana’s efforts to meet the objectives of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); particularly SDGs 1 (End poverty), SDG 2 (End hunger), SDG 3 (Good health and well-being), SDG 13 (Climate action) and SDG 15 (Life on land), as well as the African Union’s Maputo and Malabo commitments, in order to achieve accelerated agricultural growth and transformation for shared prosperity and improved livelihoods.

Specific Objectives of the Programme
The objectives of the programme are to:

  1. train young men and women in innovative, integrated, practically oriented and problem-solving research skills in agricultural and food systems, with particular emphasis on agriculture-climate-environment-natural resources management as well as agriculture-nutrition linkages.
  2. conduct basic and applied research in food systems according to internationally recognised standards.
  3. practicalize communities of practice (CoPs) concept in sustainable agricultural and food systems by building the capacity of the students to develop, design and implement prototypes.

The SAFS PHD programme intends to sharpen graduates’ entrepreneurial skills in preparation for self-employment management and leadership. A good number of career paths are open to graduates of the programme. These include but are not limited to,

  3. Agricultural trade consultant
  4. International development agent
  5. Food systems/security analysts
  6. Agroecology scientists/researchers
  7. Consultants of conservation agriculture programme

  9. Leaders in agro-industry establishments 
  10. Researchers and tertiary level lecturers
  11. Consultants in private consultancy firms
  12. Consultants to governmental establishments
  13. National and international NGOs
Entry Requirements

A CANDIDATE SEEKING ADMISSION INTO THE PHD. PROGRAM MUST:

  1. Have an M.Phil./M.Sc. by research degree in an appropriate field of study from a recognised University.   
  2. Submit an official transcript of your academic record.  
  3. Submit two referee reports from somebody familiar with the applicant’s academic work.
  4. Submit a proposal of 3-5 pages of the intended study area, including a working bibliography.  
  5. Satisfy any additional requirements prescribed by the Department/Faculty.
  6. Intake levels shall be influenced by the availability of supervisors for the student’s interest areas and fields of study. 
  7. Faculties, schools, and departments are responsible for setting admission standards in conformity with the overall university standards.
