FACULTY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES

PROGRAMME: Master of Arts (MA) in Development Sociology

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PROGRAMME: The issues created by the weakening of traditional social structures and the non-consolidation of modernized ones call for in-depth academic knowledge as well as practical abilities in dealing with the new social dynamics. The changes to Ghana's social structure have uncovered new issues that the government must address, including those with poverty, vulnerability, and marginalization. The Master of Arts in Development Sociology program will form one of the basic mechanisms geared towards driving social change and increasing awareness leading to better organization in Ghana. When society senses new and better opportunities for progress, it develops new forms of organization as a result of significant change in social institutions to exploit these new openings successfully. Society's capacity to organize resources to meet challenges and opportunities passes through well-defined stages in the course of not only its development but also how the people with the relevant skills apply the theoretical and practical knowledge in Development Sociology to address the development challenges that have bedeviled Ghana for many years now. Critically unique about the programme is the advantage of the post graduate students will derive from the university “Community Immersion Programme” that is “lived-in-experiences” of students in rural setting.
AIMS: The post graduate Programme in Development Sociology is unique from other post graduate Sociology programmes offered in the country by other sister Universities. This programme is the first of its kind to be offered in the public Universities in Ghana. PROGRMME: Master of Philosophy (Mphil) in Development Sociology

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PROGRAMME: The transformations within the Ghanaian social structure have unearthed new problems, among others, relating to poverty, vulnerability and marginality that are thrown up for public management.
The response of society to these challenges in Ghana has not been satisfactory enough, principally due to inadequacy of trained personnel with well-grounded theoretical and practical knowledge to tackle the problems within the emerging Ghanaian context (UNDP, 2021). The Department of Sociology and Social Work in which MPhil development sociology will thus present new vistas for the discipline of development sociology to contribute more effectively to the development discourse and finding practical interventions to mitigate the social challenges that confront Ghana and the rest of Africa and the world. The MPhil in Development Sociology program will form one of the basic mechanisms geared towards driving social change and increasing awareness leading to better organization in Ghana. When society senses new and better opportunities for progress, it develops new forms of organization as a result of significant change in social institutions to exploit these new openings successfully. Critically unique about the programme is the advantage of the post graduate students will derive from the university “Community Immersion’’ Programme that is “lived-in-experiences” of students in rural setting. PROGRAMME: Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Development Sociology

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PROGRAMME: In order to deal with the new social dynamics, which have been brought about by the weakening of conventional social structures and the non-consolidation of modernized ones, it is necessary to have both in-depth academic knowledge and practical experience. The inadequate skilled professionals in Doctor of Philosophy with solid theoretical and practical expertise to address the issues in the developing Ghanaian environment has been a major element in the society's unsatisfactory response to these concerns in Ghana (UNDP, 2021). The contribution of the population through effective participation in bottom-up policy formulation processes would provide room for interrogation of traditional customary practices that undermine the integrity of individuals in society (GSAA, 2020). The PhD in Development Sociology program will form one of the basic mechanisms geared towards driving social change and increasing awareness leading to better organization in Ghana. When society senses new and better opportunities for progress, it develops new forms of organization as a result of significant change in social institutions to exploit these new openings successfully. Development Sociology is one of the sciences that can withstand the test of time in ensuring that the intended change in Ghana is realized because development requires resources such as capital, technology, and supporting infrastructure to survive. This programme is the first of its kind to be offered in the public Universities in Ghana. There are a number of development sociologists in Ghana, none of them acquired the title through “Community Immersion” Programme blended with academic work but rather, through research and publications.
In addition to this, the post graduate students in Development Sociology as part of their practical work will undertake a department project on the field. They will identify at least one social problem relative to Development Sociology practices, apply their Development Sociology practical research strategies and present a comprehensive report to the department after the field in partial fulfilment for the award of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Development Sociology and this will be compulsory for all Graduate students in the department. Students are allowed to write thesis after course work in the first year. Thesis work starts in the second year.
AIMS: The programme aims at training students to engage in scientific research activities, practical knowledge in development sociology and also acquire both theoretical and practical knowledge as well as skills in dealing with problems that are related to the society. The graduate students of Development Sociology in the Department of Sociology and Social Work would in the first year offer core courses that would broaden their scope for their content analysis.  The Development workshops and “lived-in-experiences” or ‘’Community Immersion’’ will be multi-disciplinary in approach which allows graduate students to adopt integrated disciplinary approach to problem solving. To provide students the diverse social issues, distinct nature of oppression and discrimination and their implications in the society.

ADMISSION: Candidates seeking admissions into a four (4) year postgraduate programme in PhD. Development Sociology must possess the following:

  1. Admission is open to both National and International applicants.
  2. Students applying for PhD in Development Sociology must possess an MPhil or its equivalent in a relevant area from a recognized   University.

Also, the published Regulations for Junior Members Handbook provide further information about rules and regulations within the University environment some of which are relevant for graduate students as well.
