Head of Department of Food Science and Technology Pays Working Visit to Students on Industrial Attachment

The head of the Department of Food Science and Technology of the Faculty of Agriculture, Food and Consumer Sciences, of the University for Development Studies, Prof. Gustav Mahunu has paid a working visit to some students of the department who are currently on industrial attachment at the Praise Export Company Limited at Pokuase, a suburb of Accra, to monitor the extent to which the students were practically applying the knowledge they have acquired in the classroom.

The industrial attachment is a Third Trimester program of the University for Development Studies which marks the end of every academic year.

During the period, students are dispatched by the University to various companies and agencies across the country to have a practical experience of what they learned during their course of study.

Also, the industrial attachment enables students to adjust to the basic nature of work, adapt to the use of various tools, and equipment associated with the food industry and related agencies. The practicum also prepares the students for the job market.

At the end of his visit, Prof. Gustav Mahunu expressed satisfaction at the level of contribution of the students to the general output of the companies to which they have been sent on industrial attachement. He appealed to the companies to establish branches in the Northern part of the country in order to make their services available not just to the general populace, but also to the hundreds of students who cannot afford to travel to Accra to acquire such practical experience due to financial constraints.

He encouraged other departments and faculties of the University to make follow-up visits to institutions, agencies and companies to which they have sent students on industral attachement. He added that such visits help to build relationships with, and bridge the gap between the academia and industry.
