The 11th edition of the Federation of African University Sports (FASU) Games kicked off with a dazzling opening ceremony at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) on Saturday 21st September, 2024, marking the start of a week-long event that has attracted over 18 African countries and more than 40 universities. The prestigious event, which runs from September 21 to September 30, 2024, aims to foster unity through sports and cultural exchange among university students across Africa.

A Vibrant Ceremony to Remember

The ceremony was nothing short of spectacular, with vibrant displays of African culture, music, and dance filling the air. Traditional Nigerian drummers, dressed in colorful regalia, opened the evening with a powerful performance, followed by a procession of athletes from each participating nation, all waving their country’s flags with pride. The vibrant mix of national colors set the tone for what will undoubtedly be an exciting week of competition.

The University of Lagos, as the co-hosts, transformed its sports complex into a world-class venue, showcasing a fusion of modern and traditional African designs. The enthusiasm in the arena was palpable, with attendees waving flags and singing along to live music performances by some of Nigeria’s top musicians.

In a Speech delivered on his behalf, the Minister of Sports for Nigeria, Hon. Sunday Dare, emphasized the importance of sports in fostering unity among African nations. He said, Today, we celebrate not only the athletic talents of our youth but also the power of sports to bring nations together. The FASU Games serve as a beacon of hope, showing that through competition and camaraderie, we can achieve greatness as one continent.

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, expressed her pride in hosting the Games. She said, “UNILAG is honored to welcome students and athletes from across the African continent. These Games are not just about winning medals but about building friendships and celebrating our shared heritage.” She also highlighted the university’s commitment to providing top-notch facilities and hospitality for all participants.

The Vice Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU), Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, echoed these sentiments, adding that the event symbolizes the strength and unity of African universities. “Our universities are the breeding grounds for tomorrow’s leaders. These Games are an opportunity to showcase not only our sporting talents but also our values of discipline, teamwork, and resilience.” Her words were met with loud applause from the audience, many of whom had come from Lagos and neighboring states to witness the historic occasion.

A Buzzing Atmosphere Outside The Arena

Beyond the electrifying events on the field, the sidelines of the Games were abuzz with activity. A bustling marketplace had sprung up outside the main venue, where vendors sold everything from African crafts and clothing to food and beverages. The smell of freshly grilled suya and jollof rice filled the air as local entrepreneurs capitalized on the large crowds.

Corporate brands, including major banks and mobile telephony companies like MTN and Airtel, had set up vibrant stalls offering special promotions and giveaways. Banking representatives facilitated on-the-spot account openings, and mobile providers showcased new services, attracting hundreds of students and spectators. Meanwhile, traders selling souvenirs and university-branded merchandise reported brisk sales, as visitors sought mementos of the event.

The opening ceremony also featured a live concert with performances from local Afrobeats artists, which added to the already electrifying atmosphere. Crowds danced and sang along, making it clear that the FASU Games were not just about sports but also about celebration and entertainment.
