The University for Development Studies (UDS) hosted its 17th Professorial Inaugural Lecture in Tamale, featuring a thought-provoking presentation by Prof. Yakubu Ibrahim Seini, a newly appointed Professor of Applied Mathematics. Delivering his lecture on the theme “Beyond Computations: Mathematics is Key to National Development”, Prof. Seini underscored the importance of transforming mathematics education through activity-based learning to make the subject more engaging and enjoyable for students.
Addressing a diverse audience comprising university management, faculty, students, traditional leaders, and members of the public, Prof. Seini emphasized that effective mathematics education begins with teachers who are well-trained and motivated to use interactive teaching methodologies. “Mathematics should not be seen as a difficult or boring subject. Teachers must be equipped with the skills to integrate fun and practical applications into their lessons,” he stated.
He further highlighted the crucial role of parents in fostering early mathematical skills, advocating for their involvement in logical and problem-solving activities at home. “Mathematics is a universal language spoken and understood by everyone. Children must be given the benefit of a solid foundation, starting from home,” Prof. Seini remarked.
The lecture also addressed the need for continuous professional development for mathematics teachers to enhance their expertise and instructional techniques. “It is important to upgrade the knowledge and competence of teachers in mathematics by ensuring they participate in continuous professional development programs,” he stressed.
Prof. Seini called on the government to appoint individuals with the requisite expertise and willingness to collaborate with academia and the research community to improve the teaching and learning of mathematics in the country. He asserted that strong partnerships between policymakers and educational institutions would lead to significant advancements in mathematics education and national development.
The prestigious event attracted dignitaries from various sectors, including the Vice-Chancellor of UDS, Prof. Seidu Al-Hassan; the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Elliot Haruna Alhassan; and the Registrar, Mr. Nurudeen Issah Abubakar. Other members of university management, professors, traditional rulers, security personnel, students, and members of the general public were also in attendance, demonstrating the wide-ranging interest in the lecture’s theme.
The Professorial Inaugural Lecture serves as an academic tradition that allows newly appointed professors to share insights from their research and expertise, contributing to intellectual discourse and policy recommendations. Prof. Seini’s lecture reaffirmed the critical role of mathematics in shaping national progress and the need for innovative teaching approaches to inspire the next generation of problem-solvers and innovators.
