The investiture of Prof. Mohammed Muniru Iddrisu as the sixth Vice-Chancellor of the University for Development Studies (UDS) introduced a new symbol to the University’s ceremonial tradition: the Staff of Authority.

On 3 September 2026, the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Seidu Al-Hassan, presented the staff to his successor. The handover marked both the transfer of leadership and a shared commitment to the University’s future.

Conceived by Arc. Jawhari Baba-Dua, the Staff of Authority draws its central image from the baobab tree, an enduring symbol of UDS. With its deep roots and ability to thrive in challenging conditions, the baobab represents resilience, strength and life. On the staff, it evokes the University’s heritage, its connection to the communities it serves and its aspirations for the years ahead.

The baobab stands between two ram’s horns. The ram is familiar across Northern Ghana, and its horns convey strength and authority. Their position around the tree gives the design a further meaning: leadership carries a duty to protect the institution and help it grow.

Together, these elements express a principle that extends beyond the office of Vice-Chancellor. Authority at UDS should be exercised with wisdom, responsibility and a steadfast commitment to the University’s mission.

As Prof. Iddrisu begins his tenure, the Staff of Authority will stand as a visible reminder of the trust placed in him and of the collective work required to advance UDS.
