In commemoration of Ghana’s 67th Independence Anniversary, The University of Edinburgh Principal’s African Partnership Fund at the University of Ghana School of Law Auditorium on 5th March, 2024 organised a debate competition among universities in Ghana to help address climate change.
The debate competition which featured the top Ghanaian public universities, including the University of Ghana (UG), Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and the University of Cape Coast (UCC) on the resolution, ‘Africa must decolonize to effectively address the scourge of climate change’ saw team UDS after the preliminary round, take on KNUST in the grand final and beating to claim the ultimate prize.
The UDS debate society led by the Director of Sports, Mr Ibrahim Tanko Shaibu and Coordinator for Debate Society, Prof Jonas K. Fiadzawoo presented prizes won by team UDS to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Seidu Al-Hassan in his office on Friday, 15th March, 2024.
After the delivery of a brief report on the entire competition and the presentation of the prizes which included a certificate and trophies by the UDS Debate Team, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Seidu Al-Hassan who was impressed congratulated the Team for winning the ultimate prize. He further applauded the entire debate team for their consistency in continuously expanding the image of the university nationally and internationally. He encouraged the students to continue to uplift the image of the university wherever they are.
Prof. Al-Hassan remarked that this feat was so special to him because of the importance of the subject matter, an area which is a major concern across the globe. He promised the university’s unflinching support to the Debate Team, highlighting the need for their recent impressive achievements be hugely recognised and supported by the university. He wished the students well in their academic pursuits and future endeavours.
The students that participated in the competition were; Mr. Musah Abdul Razak, Miss. Issah Muleikatu, Mr. Mahadi Awedega Ayiwoli, Mr. Dewilaa Luther Fembeti, Mr. Kassim Fusheini Maltiti, Mr. Samsudeen Apiiga Yakubu and Mr. Sulemana Mohammed Jamaldeen.
