Level 400 students of the Department of Food Science and Technology on have organised an exhibition of food products. At the exhibition, the Head of Department of the Department of Food Science and Technology, Prof. Gustav Mahunu disclosed that, the various innovative food products and other food items produced by the students were developed from roots and tubers, vegetables and fruits, cereals and legumes and oil seeds.
Prof. Gustav Mahunu stated that, the purpose of the course in processing of plant products is to develop foods from the different food constituents and help students identify market opportunities, reduce post-harvest losses, increase product diversity or consumers preferences, and help students to develop their own businesses after graduation.
The exhibition brought together, experts in the food processing chain as panellists, to evaluate and complement the students’ efforts as they work hard to contribute to making the food industry safer for consumers and at the same time, create jobs for themselves.
The panelist were Dr. Florence Amagloh (SARI, Nyankpala), a renowned Food Processor and Entrepreneur in Tamale, Madam Gaf, the Director of the UDS Business Directorate, Mr. Yakubu Balma, a Senior Lecturer from the Faculty of Biosciences, Dr. Lydia Quansah, a Senior Lecturer, Family and Consumer Sciences Department, Dr. Peter Birteeb, Prof. Paul Nkegbe of the School of Economics, Prof. Haruna Issahaku, UDS School of Business, Dr. Newlove Afoakwah, Food Science and Technology Department, Mr. Solomon Chikpah, Food Science and Technology Department, and Mr Patrick Owusu Ansah, also of the Food Science and Technology Department.
The event was facilitated by Ms. Nana Oye Pobi the Course instructor of Food Products Development. The panellists were impressed with the quality of the products exhibited by the students and called on the university and the general public to look out for the products on the markets.
