In a grand unveiling ceremony at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), the anticipation for the 2023 West African Universities Games (WAUG) reached a new high as the sports director of the University for Development Studies who doubles as the President of the West Africa Universities Sports Federation, Mr. Shaibu Tanko, took centre stage.
The Vice Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, Prof Simeon Bamire, together the President of the West Africa Universities Sports Federation, unveiled a mascot for the 2023 West African Universities Games (WAUG).
The prestigious event, set to host over 200 universities, is expected to feature intense competitions in table tennis, basketball, and athletics.
Mr. Shaibu Tanko, acknowledging the pivotal role of sports in fostering unity and camaraderie among West African nations, commended the OAU for hosting the games. He emphasized that this initiative would not only revitalize the association but also strengthen the bonds within the region.
Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Interior Minister, further elevated the event's significance by committing to be the special guest of honour for both the opening and closing ceremonies.
