Shuaib Mbelayim A. Husein is a Lecturer and Supervisor of the Micro-livestock Unit in the Department of Animal Science. He is the Deputy Department Coordinator of the university’s flagship Third Trimester Field Practical Program (TTFPP), and Deputy Supervisor of the Small Ruminant Unit. He has about 3 years’ professional and 4 years’ non-professional experience with the University for Development Studies and about 13 years with Ghana Education Service. Before joining the University for Development Studies as an Assistant Lecturer, he was an Assistant Director of Education in the Ghana Education Service and taught at Pong-Tamale Senior High School in the Northern Region. He has published more than 11 articles in peer reviewed journals and several conferences’ papers. He has provided instructions in Population Genetics and Animal Breeding, Animal Experimentation and Research Techniques, Research Methods in Veterinary Nursing, Livestock in Rural Development and Production Systems, Principles of Animal Science, and Animal Breeding and Genetics at the undergraduate level. He undertakes research in the areas of sustainable use of animal genetic resources, livestock and/or genetic improvement, health and production. Mr. Husein has conducted extensive livestock characterization research and micro-livestock improvement across northern Ghana. His current research foci are utilisation of quantitative and molecular genetics as tools for the sustainable use of animal genetic resources (AGnR), genetic and molecular characterization of livestock, docility of the guinea fowl, and Livestock fattening as a business venture in poverty reduction in northern Ghana. He also has interest in climate change and livestock resilience, livestock in community development and poverty reduction, conservation genetics and selection for disease resistant traits as tool for guinea fowl improvement and health. He is a member of several professional associations including Ghana Society of Animal Production (GSAP), Ghana Science Association (GSA), Ghana Animal Science Association (GASA), All African Society of Animal Production (AASAP) and University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG).
