The Faculty of Sustainable Development Studies under the leadership of the Dean, Dr. Adams Sulemana Achanso on July 27th 2023 held its 2023 Development Education Studies (DES) Entrepreneurship Seminar at the Dr. Andani Anda Academic Board Chamber. The Seminar was under the theme “Entrepreneurship for Practice: Stimulating Entrepreneurial Spirit in Students”.
The Dean, Dr. Achanso said among others, the seminar aimed at assessing students’ innovative business and entrepreneurial ideas which can be harnessed and ultimately lead to job creation.
He added that entrepreneurship holds the key to solving the Ghanaian society’s most complex problems including unemployment. He challenged the students to aim at becoming self-employed.
The Head of Department of the Department of Development Management and Policy Studies (DDMPS) Dr. Baba Musah reiterated the importance of developing entrepreneurial skills whilst in school. He said considering the demand for non-existing white-colour jobs, students must start preparing themselves to become self-employed.
An Entrepreneur, Lecturer and Consultant, Mr. Iddrisu Abdul Rashid, commended the students for putting forth very innovative business ideas. He encouraged the students to pursue their business ideas by exploring various business pitching competitions to realize their goals.
The Executive Director of MALWIN FOODS, who was the Guest Speaker at the seminar, Mrs. Fatahiya Halidu Imoro recounted some of the challenges she encountered on her journey to become a successful entrepreneur. She admonished students not to relent on their efforts at seeking to become business owners. She urged students to be committed to work once the idea is conceived.
She urged the youth to consider taking up entrepreneurial activities during their academic journey.
“The youth have been depending so much on the government, it’s high time they take decisions and try to do something for themselves like entering into a business in support of what the government is doing. That is the first step to curb unemployment in the country”.
The seminar was climaxed with various students making presentations on their business ideas. Soochi Briquettes, Abstract Vintage, UDS Plust, Drop Shopping, Vela Baskets and Pads, Captain Catfish, Sustainable Furnishing Ltd, Oyster Mushroom, Nasara Peanut Oil and Agro North made presentations on innovative business concepts seeking to address unemployment and its associated problems.
